New teachers bring much energy and enthusiasm

The enthusiasm and energy of the participants at the New Teacher Induction Gathering in Castletown provided another clear indication that the future of the Lasallian Mission in the District is in safe hands.

Seventeen teachers from schools in Ireland met in Castletown on Thursday and Friday, February 6th and 7th, for their first taste of Lasallian Formation and it proved to be a very valuable experience for all.

Led by Director of Formation, Pat Walsh, the gathering allowed teachers the opportunity to learn more about the important role of a Lasallian educator and to share their own experiences.

Thursday night began in a relaxed manner as participants introduced themselves and shared something of their individual stories. Auxiliary Visitor, Br Tommy Walsh, then traced the life story of St John Baptist de La Salle and highlighted how the Founder’s ideas remain relevant in today’s schools.

Friday morning began with Derek Doherty from Castletown Pastoral Centre leading Morning Prayer before giving an overview of the services provided by the retreat centre.

Pat Walsh then explained the Lasallian Core Principles and the values that make a school Lasallian. Group discussions reflected on how these core principles are being put in action in schools and the examples raised illustrated the strength of the Mission in the District.

Another example of the Mission in action was provided by Tom O’Neill from MEL Committee Ireland who presented on the Lasallian projects that have built schools for some of the poorest regions in India and Africa.

This was followed by a very insightful presentation from former Lasallian Principal and current Board of Management Chair, Joe Twomey, who gave some very practical advice on classroom management. The group discussions offered teachers the chance to share and learn from their own experiences.

The morning session also saw Pat Walsh deliver advice on safeguarding while Communications Officer, Eunan Whyte, provided an overview on the structure of the District and many initiatives that can be used in the classroom to nurture the Lasallian ethos. He also outlined how teachers can continue their journey with upcoming CPDs.
