Special reasons to celebrate Founder’s Day at Churchtown
The Annual De La Salle Day celebration at De La Salle College Churchtown took place this year on Friday, May 12th.
De La Salle Day in Churchtown is always a special occasion, but for a variety of reasons this year’s celebration was extra special; our school reached the fantastic milestone of 70 years in Churchtown, we are opening the door to a new and exciting chapter in our school’s proud history by becoming a Co-educational school next academic year, 40 years had passed since our school made history in becoming the first ever non fee paying school to win the Leinster school’s Senior Cup. The scene certainly was set for an extra special celebration.
Our annual Founder’s Day Celebration is all about welcome and this year was exceptional in that regard, we were delighted to welcome back a large number of retired staff members, a large contingent of past pupils, in particular a number of past pupils from the 1950s, the 1983 Senior Cup Winning Team and of course our current students.
Our Assembly Hall looked fantastic, thanks to the hard work of Ms Jordan and her team of helpers. Past Pupil Fr Paul Thornton led a beautiful liturgy as always, full of poignant references to the teachings of John Baptist de La Salle.
The Liturgical team of Mr Forde and Ms McDermott did a fantastic job ensuring our students were central to the celebration. Mr Forde also led a fantastic student choir who added immensely to the service.
Following the mass Ms Fitzpatrick introduced our Lasallian Award winners and we were treated to a beautiful poem about John Baptist de La Salle read by students. This was followed by a special presentation to the 1983 Cup Team the highlight of which was a rousing speech by the team captain Michael McArdle. The morning was of course finished with the traditional distribution of ice cream, a fitting end to a really special De La Salle Day celebration.
